1.REGISTER TOUR GUIDE COURSE
Choose an ILP to register. What is an ILP? It stands for Institut Latihan Pelancongan, registered under the Ministry of Tourism, Arts & Culture (MOTAC). There are 2 types of entry accepted by the ministry :
- Through Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) with 6 passes including Bahasa Malaysia, or Diploma / Degree under MQA (Malaysian Qualification Accreditation). Note : Not all diplomas and degrees are accepted by MQA
- NO SPM? You can still register under any ILP, provided that you have been working under the tourism industry for at least 5 years. The fields considered as tourism industry include Travel Agency, Hospitality, Taxi Driver, Grab Driver, Restaurants etc..
- There are various course prices to choose from different ILPs. The minimum fee set by the ministry is RM5000. The choice is yours.
2.ATTEND TOUR GUIDE COURSE
Your documents will be submitted to MOTAC by the ILP.
Once approved, you can now attend the course at your chosen ILP. Currently, the method of learning acceptable are hybrid (face to face in classrooms) or online.
- The ILP will register you under another ministry invloved, which is The Ministry of Human Resource, under the section of Jabatan Pembangunan Kemahiran (JPK)
- There are 11 modules currently set by JPK which must be completed. Soon, the number of modules will become 5 as JPK has already updated the new syllabus called NOSS (National Occupational Skills Standard)
- You will need to attend theory and practical classes. Minimum attendance to qualify is 80%
3.ATTEND PPL
- Once you have completed the course, you need to attend PPL. What is PPL? It stands for Pengesahan Pegawai Luar
- JPK will send an officer called PPL to check your portfolio (file)
- If the PPL is satisfied, he or she will endorse your file, which means you are eligible to sit for MOTAC Exams
4.SIT FOR MOTAC EXAMS
Once you have passed PPL, your final exam will be carried out by MOTAC. There are 2 sections :
- Theory Exam Online. There are 60 questions with 4 multiple answers to be completed within 60 minutes. The passing mark is 60%
- You will need to attend the practical exam within 7 days upon completion of the Theory exam. The passing mark is 75%
- You need to pass both sections to qualify as a City Guide
- Which Language? The choice of language during practical exam determines which language will be displayed on your license.
5.APPLY LICENSE

Various documents need to be uploaded to the system. If you fulfill all requirements, then you will receive your license through the state MOTAC, where you are currently residing.
